The Bethel Park School District has confirmed a case of whooping cough at the high school.A letter sent to parents warned them that their child may have been exposed to the illness, which is also known as pertussis. Symptoms of whooping cough generally start like a common cold, followed by a cough that gets worse over a week or two. People suffering from whooping cough may have coughing spells in which they can’t catch their breath between coughs.Symptoms can appear as late as 5 to 21 days after infection.A spokesperson for the school district said they would not be making any further comment beyond what was in the letter to parents.
