Coronavirus Update: Map Shows 60 U.S. Cases as Officials Prepare for the Virus to Spread

There have been 60 cases of coronavirus in the United States and thousands of people are being monitored for the virus.

Health officials were able to trace the origin of all but one of the cases in the United States back to China or the quarantined Diamond Princess cruise ship. One person, a patient in California, tested positive for the virus despite no known contact with someone who was infected or relevant travel history–raising the possibility that the virus could be spreading in communities.

“We knew this was inevitable as it relates to the nature of these viruses that that incident would occur,” California Governor Gavin Newsom said during a press conference on Wednesday.

The bulk of the cases in the United States–45–involve people who were repatriated from Wuhan, China, the epicenter of the outbreak, on government-chartered flights or evacuated from the Diamond Princess cruise ship. Twelve people tested positive for the virus after returning from China, and two people transmitted the virus to their spouses.

Thirty-three of the 60 cases are in California, including the case of unknown origin, 24 people from repatriation flights, seven people who traveled to China, and one case of human-to-human transmission.

During a press conference on Thursday, Newsom said that more than 8,000 people in California were being monitored for the virus but has resisted declaring a state of emergency.

Seven other states–Arizona, Washington, Texas, Illinois, Wisconsin and Massachusetts–have had confirmed cases, as shown in the graphic below that Statista created.

Texas has had 10 cases, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Of those cases, eight involved people who were evacuated from the ship, and two were quarantined at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland after returning on a repatriation flight.

Massachusetts, Wisconsin and Arizona each reported one cases, all involving people who recently traveled to China. Illinois has had two cases, including a case of human-to-human transmission after a person who recently traveled to China transmitted the virus to their spouse. Patients who were repatriated on flights from Wuhan or the Diamond Princess have been treated in multiple states, including Nebraska and Washington.

The risk to the American public remains low, according to health officials, and about 80 percent of people who become infected have mild symptoms. Still, the CDC is expecting there to be more cases and urged people to prepare.

On Friday, acting White House Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney told attendees at the Conservative Political Action Conference that some schools would probably shut down and public transportation be affected as a result of the coronavirus.

“We know how to handle this … that’s the message you try and get out,” Mulvaney said. “There are professionals handling it, and we’re going to do the very best that we can.”
