THE GOOD NEWS IS, NONE OF THOSE WHO VISITED ITALY IS SHOWING ANY SYMPTOMS OF CORONAVIRUS, BUT THEY WILL REMAIN OUT OF SCHOOL INDEFINITELY. A GROUP OF 19 STUDENTS, PLUS 3 ADULTS FROM NEWTON NORTH HIGH SCHOOL RETURNED SATURDAY FROM A FOUR WEEK TRIP TO FLORENCE AND ROME, ITALY. THAT COUNTRY IS EXPERIENCING AN OUTBREAK OF THE CORONAVIRUS. THE SCHOOL DISTRICT IS REQUIRING THAT THE GROUP TO REMAIN HOME, AND CHECK FOR SYMPTOMS. >> WE ASK OUR STUDENTS TO BE LOOKING FOR, TO DO SELF-MONITORING AND TAKE THEIR TEMPERATURES TWICE A DAY. >> IT’S UNSETTLING. STUDENTS WANT TO RETURN TO SCHOOL. AT THE SAME TIME, ITHINK THEY UNDERSTAND THE WORLD WE ARE IN RIGHT NOW. SERA: THE SCHOOL IS WORKING ON A PLAN TO CONTINUE THE STUDENTS’ EDUCATION EVEN THOUGH THEY WILL NOT BE PHYSICALLY ATTENDING THE HIGH SCHOOL. NO DECISION HAS BEEN MADE ON HOW LONG THEY HAVE TO REMAIN OUT OF SCHOOL.

A group of Newton North High School students who returned from Europe on Saturday are being urged not to go to school amid coronavirus concerns.The group was on a month-long educational trip in Italy, which has seen a spike in coronavirus cases.Newton school officials said the 19 students, two staff members and a retired teacher visited Florence for three weeks and Rome for one week. They have been advised to stay home from school until further notice. The school made it clear that the step is being taken out of an abundance of caution. No students have been diagnosed with the virus or show symptoms of the virus, school officials said. The school is working with state and local health officials to make sure everyone is monitored and healthy before they return to class.
