The Rhode Island Department of Health announced the state’s first presumptive positive case of the coronavirus known as COVID-19 on Sunday morning.The person, who is in their 40s, traveled to Europe in mid-February, which included stops in Italy, France and Spain. Italy has had more than 880 confirmed cases of COVID-19, according to the World Health Organization.The patient tested positive for COVID-19 under testing developed by RIDOH’s State Health Laboratories. The positive test results were discovered Saturday.The case will remain presumptive until the positive test is confirmed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.“The risk here in Rhode Island, at this point, is low and we have been preparing for this for weeks,” said Gov. Gina Raimondo. “So the message is, ‘Be careful and be vigilant, but don’t panic.’”State health officials said they are coordinating closely with the hospital where the patent is currently being treated and all infection control protocols are being followed.”The Rhode Island Department of Health has been preparing for weeks to ensure that we have a structure in place to, to the best of our ability, limit or prevent the spread of COVID-19 in Rhode Island. It is very important that people wash their hands regularly, cover their coughs and sneezes, and stay home if they are sick.”Health officials said the individual had limited travel in Rhode Island since returning from Italy and had not returned to their workplace since. Outreach to the people who were in direct contact with the individual has already begun and efforts are underway to ensure that they undergo a 14-day period of self-monitoring for symptoms at home with public health supervision.The individual’s immediate family members have already been self-quarantining at home.There is one confirmed case of COVID-19 in New England, which is in Massachusetts. The Massachusetts Department of Public Health said the risk in the state remains low.There have been more than 60 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the United States, a total that includes 44 people aboard a Diamond Princess cruise ship and three people from Wuhan, China who were repatriated to the country.
