The county in Washington state grappling with a coronavirus outbreak is working to buy a motel to house patients, an official said.
King County Executive Dow Constantine ordered the purchase of the motel to house and isolate patients in the Seattle suburb, which has reported more than a dozen confirmed cases, news station KOMO reported.
“We have moved to a new stage in the fight to contain, mitigate and manage this outbreak,” Constantine said at a Monday press conference.
Negotiations for the motel are expected to be finalized by the end of the week, the report said.
“The challenge is making sure is that the people who are infected are sheltered,” Constantine said.
The deal comes as the county announced there were 14 confirmed cases, including the deaths of five patients.
“Even this early in the outbreak, our hospitals are feeling the strain,” said Patty Hayes, who is Seattle and King County director of public health, according to news outlet MyNorthwest.
Throughout the state, there are 231 people being monitored for symptoms of the contagious disease, KOMO reported.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported Monday that there were at least 91 confirmed cases in 10 states.
