Contra Costa County officials spoke to members of the media on Friday to provide additional information on a COVID-19 outbreak at a senior living facility.
Officials revealed the facility is Orinda Care Center, a 47-bed skilled living facility that is home to many elderly residents. Initially, there were two reported cases among residents, and three cases among staff members. The staff members were sent home to self-isolate, and the rest of the facility was then tested.
Subsequent testing revealed 22 new cases among residents, with 14 tests coming back negative. Those who tested negative have been separated from those who tested positive, and tests will be regularly conducted at the facility to monitor the spread. Two patients have been hospitalized thus far, and their conditions were not given.
County public health officer Dr. Chris Farnitano stated that nearly half of the 27 total individuals who tested positive are over the age of 80, and the facility will remain open so individuals can be monitored and continue to receive care.
“If they’re brought home, the virus could spread to family members, so the ones who would be providing care would then not be able to,” he said. “We definitely want them to remain there where we can monitor them, isolate them and care for them. Many are brought there for care their families just cannot provide, so most cannot bring them home and provide that level of 24-hour nursing care these facilities provide.”
During the press conference, county officials also issued a “strong recommendation” that residents wear masks or other forms of protective face covering when going to the grocery store or other essential activities.
As of Friday afternoon, Contra Costa County has 276 confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus and three deaths.
