Sherrell lost 70 pounds. Seven years ago, during her freshman year of college, she became a vegetarian and started working out. As she lost weight and adopted a new lifestyle, she learned to love her body, stretch marks, loose skin, and all.
My name is Sherrell, and I’m 25 years old. I spent the majority of my life obese. This was the result of not being interested in a healthy lifestyle. Fast forward to my Freshman year of college (August 2013): I became a vegetarian and decided to start working out. I went to the gym five days a week and became a certified spin instructor.
As the weight fell off, I became obsessed with Brazilian Butt Lift videos and videos of liposuction. Watching those videos and realizing I would never obtain that body made me depressed. I had to learn to love my natural body (stretch marks and loose skin included).
What inspired you to keep going, even when you wanted to give up?
What inspired me to keep going was looking back on where I started to where I am now. Have I ever given up? Yes, but I always bounced back. Anyone who had to make a drastic change understands how hard this can be.
How did you change your eating habits?
I became a vegetarian after a bet with a roommate. We wanted to see who could stop eating meat the longest. It’s fair to say that I won. It’s officially been eight years.
What is your workout routine?
I work out five days a week, sometimes six depending on how my body feels. I do fasted cardio three times a week. I was obsessed with having a big bottom, so I worked legs three days a week. I lowered that to 2 days now that I am focusing on toning my arms and back.
Starting weight/Current weight
I lost a total of 70 pounds. I’ve gone from 255 pounds to 185 pounds.
What is your height?
I am 5 feet, 5 inches tall.
Is weight loss surgery part of your journey?
I did not have any surgeries. (Broke college student here.)
What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned so far?
The biggest lesson I learned was to be patient. I started my journey with fad diets and weight-loss pills. I gained it back quickly, which caused me to want to give up. I had to learn that it is a lifestyle.
What advice would you like to share with women who want to lose weight?
If I could give any advice, it would be to take your time and accept that any progress is great progress. It took me nearly eight years to get to where I am. I lost weight and gained weight, and my journey was far from perfect. I am currently in the midst of toning and gaining more muscle. I might not have a Brazilian Butt Lift body, but I’m still proud of it.
