Chigozie lost 90 pounds | Black Weight Loss Success

Transformation of the Day: Chigozie lost 90 pounds. She’s a doctor, a wife, and a mom. Working in a toxic work environment, having three children in less than two years, and dealing with the pressures of the pandemic all took their toll on her and the pounds piled on. Determined to regain her confidence and her health, she committed to changing her eating and exercise habits for good.

What was your motivation? What inspired you to keep going, even when you wanted to give up?
I truly believe if you look good, you feel good. I was not happy with the reflection I saw in the mirror. It began to affect me mentally, emotionally, and physically.

Working in a toxic work environment, which stressed me out immensely, led to me turning to comfort foods and snacking to cope. Also, having three kids less than two years (the birth of my daughter and then giving birth to my twins) took a significant toll on my body.

And… let’s not forget that dealing with a lockdown during the pandemic led me to overindulge in food. The lack of physical activity just added extra pounds to my already increasing weight.

On June 15, 2020, I told myself enough is enough. That was the day I started my regimen and began my weight loss journey. My desire to regain my confidence, be a healthy/active mom to keep up with little ones, and take back control of my health and life were huge motivators. I was determined not to give up and took it as a challenge to reach high for my goals.

Chigozie before and after

How did you change your eating habits?
I adopted a low carb/keto diet and practiced intermittent fasting 5-7 days a week, only eating in a 6-hour window. I steered clear of high calorie and sugary beverages. I was very disciplined with my regimen but still allowed myself cheat meals on occasions.

I worked with a virtual nutrition/fitness expert, @dr.trehunna, to help kickstart my weight loss journey. He developed a plan for me to follow, with tips for food recommendations to workouts.

What did your workout routine consist of? How often did you work out?
Initially, I started doing low impact cardio exercises, which consisted of walking/light jogs in my neighborhood and on my treadmill. Since gyms were not open, I turned to YouTube videos for HIIT and boot camp style workouts. I worked out for an average of five days a week but always listened to my body if I needed to rest.

What was your starting weight? What is your current weight?
My starting weight was exactly 260 pounds on June 15, 2020. I’ve lost a total of 90 pounds in less than five months. My current weight is 170 pounds.

What is your height?
5’5″

Is weight loss surgery part of your journey?
No, weight loss is not part of my journey.

What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned so far?
Honestly, if you put your whole mind and heart into whatever you want to achieve, you will be successful. Taking care of yourself and being healthy is a lifestyle change that you have to commit yourself to for long-lasting results.

What advice do you have for women who want to lose weight?
Find what works for you and stick to it. Everyone’s journey is unique, so don’t get obsessed with comparing yourself with anyone else. Stay the course and celebrate your small victories along the way. Consistency is key. Keep pushing!
